What this bill does
In plain terms: what it changes and who it affects.
This proposal creates one EU framework for fisheries and aquaculture statistics, replacing five existing regulations and reusing existing data where possible.
Who it affects
It affects fishers, fishing fleets, aquaculture producers, fishery product markets, and Member States collecting or holding fisheries and aquaculture data.
Core of the proposal
- Requires statistics on catches, landings, catching fleets, aquaculture production, flows, and establishments.
- Allows Eurostat to reuse EU and national administrative databases for catch and fleet statistics.
- Adds coverage for discards, recreational catches, sensitive species, organic aquaculture, and aquaculture establishments.
- Allows Eurostat, with safeguards, to share aggregated data with international fisheries organisations.
Key provisions
- Takes effect
- It enters into force 20 days after Official Journal publication and applies from 1 January of the year following 18 months after adoption.
- Transitional law
- Member States need not transmit sensitive-species and recreational-catch data until those data become available under fisheries control rules.
